HUGE SPOILERS OBVIOUSLY!!!:
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Story review

Man o man! This story! Oh, boi! This will be short. The story itself is not long. The story starts with the old man at the start but once he tells you about the calamity and gives you the paraglider, you can beat the game at that point. The guardians and memories are all optional quests. Do they help? Of course,! But, it doesn’t feel like there is any real reason to dooo them. You do them because they are main quests and you know they are needed to make the fight with calamity Ganon easier. The game does not give you any real motivation to gather the guardians. The most story you get is from the memories Impa sends you out to get once you fix your sheikah slate, but even then, all the cutscenes and story boils down to is “destiny.” The cutscenes focus on Zelda talking about her destiny to be a princess and to not help with the calamity when she wants to help. She is in pain and wants to fight her destiny while she calls you out for following your destiny (being a royal guard).
The divine beast champions who are the people who control their respective divine beast each have great personalities. They are well written and it’s a shame that you only see them for such a short time.
I guess the story ultimately is just fighting to save the land of hyrule and for some that may be enough motivation. For myself, I need the villain to also have a reason to commit heinous acts. Throughout the entire adventure from great plateu to hyrule castle there are no enemies that talk or anyone that summoned Ganon. Ganon just appeared one day. They say he is just calamity incarnate but there had to have been some reason for ganon to appear even 10,000 years ago. Maybe I missed it cuz I’m dumb but I didn’t see any real reason for Ganon to appear.
Welp, to summarize all this:
·         There are no active villains, calamity Ganon just exists.
·         You can skip all the divine beasts thus skipping characters and “story arcs”
·         I felt like Zelda was whiney but yes, she was in pain.
·         It’s your destiny plot. So, if you like that there it is.
·         Well written side characters but are only around for a short time.
TL:DR-
slightly above average 6/10 story.
No motivation to fight Ganon, no true villains.
No villain motivation.

80% of story is skippable (This was intentional by Nintendo)
