Kong: Skull Island Review

So this movie has been getting a bad rep lately from pro film critics. The main complaint I’m seeing is that they watch it expecting super deep and well developed human characters. I personally just don’t see why you would care about the people in a monster movie, I’ve heard it said that “if all you want is to watch giant CGI monsters fight then you must be 12 years old.” Maybe I just want that feeling of being a kid again and mindlessly watching impossible sized monsters fight. Seems fun to me.
The actual movie, as a movie, is not that great, but as a monster movie it’s enjoyable. People also claim that you need to just rate movies as a whole and not to subcategorize them. I also don’t believe this. For example what if little Billy went to see a musical but he hates musicals but the reviews for the movie say it’s amazing but never actually mention that it’s a musical. So he sits down and BAM! Songs start playing and singing starts up. Billy is pissed, but if those reviews had said as a musical then he would have just said ew and moved on with his life. See what I’m saying. my point is people want to know what they getting into.
This is the case for Kong: Skull Island. As a movie, the human characters were bland and boring. The movie does try to write in some personality for all of them but it all comes off as cheesy dialogue. The only well written characters in the film were Samuel L. Jackson and John C. Reillys. Jackson gets a little extra attention for his character because he ends up being the “main villain” and Reilly’s character gets his spotlight in the beginning. People have said that Reilly doesn’t fit well in the film but I believe that his personality and comedy is perfect for the narrative.
Skull Island itself looked pretty aight. There were some times where you could easily tell it was green screen and it did look bad. Some of the creatures that pop up were down right frightening, one in particular had the whole theatre freaking out, it was hilarious.
Now our boi Kong tho. He was LIT. he’s HUGE and when he fights you feel like he is powerful. They gotta size him up for the TBA Godzilla VS Kong reboot. He’s also in the movie for a whole lot of time. If you are going to see this movie for Kong it definitely delivers. He has a good number of fights and he is just the best part of the whole film.
Overall this movie delivers on what it’s meant to do, introduce King Kong. If you are looking for an enjoyable monster movie this film gives you that.
*THERE IS A POST CREDIT SCENE*
TL:DR-  as a film- 5-6/10
·         Bad green screen at times
·         Boring and bland human characters
·         Great fights
·         Great monsters that inhabit the world of Skull Island
·         Bad logic at times (why can humans out run a monster whose stride is 10x their size???)
AS A MONSTER MOVIE 8/10
·         Main monster Kong in it for a good portion of the film
·         Solid fights
·         Great monster design
